Block Party Small Group

Block Party is one of the guilds newest groups. They formed in January 2004. They meet twice a month in most months, and every now and then have an extra meeting to have a charity sewing session. Block Party is honoured to be a group to have a male quilter.

Their first project was a mystery quilt. Below are pictures of the quilts. Sharni Vaughan lead the group through the mystery.

She writes: "I found the instructions on line, but found they assumed some quilting skill which would be too hard for the beginner quilters in the group. So I made a sample quilt first, editing and adding to the instructions as I went. The original instructions were not specific enough about feeding the quarter square triangles through the sewing machine the same way each time, so when I was done with those X squares, I found they did not go together right when it came to adding the border. My husband spent quite a bit of time at my design wall, turning patches this way and that to get a design he thought was pleasing, he made me make a couple of extras up, and I had a new border design. The general feeling of the group at the end of the mystery, was the "mistake" looked better than the intended design. My test quilt with the modified border is the one in the bright colours, the quilt with the correct border, is at the bottom of this page in purples and browns. You decide which border design you like best."

Twisted Tails by Sharni Vaughan

This one was made as a sample by Sharni to make sure the instructions for the mystery were correct. The fabrics were chosen by her then 6 year old son. When Sharni tried to direct him to subtler colours he insisted he wanted fashion cats for his grandmother. The quilt will be given to his grandmother who loves cats.

Twisted Tails by Emily A

Emily chose bright fabrics that have a silver shimmer to them.

Twisted Tails by Renee Baron

Renee chose purple and green fabrics for her quilt.

Twisted Tails by Ann Doherty

Ann like Renee chose purple and green for her quilt, but the quilts came out looking totally different.

Twisted Tails by Daniel Mills

Dan's quilt has a masculine feel to it thanks to the colour choices. He quilted his quilt on his longarm quilting machine.

Twisted Tails by Sharni Vaughan

Sharni did this quilt as she directed the group through the mystery. This quilt was brought to meeting in pieces to show what was expected for the next step. This time Sharni chose the fabrics instead of her son.

If you wish to run this mystery, it is a free download from Quiltzine.

Block Party Small Group is now working on a new project, a row quilt. We have put their rules and set up for the row quilt on a web page, for their use and to show others to help them set up their own row quilt projects. We will be sure to have photos of the completed project in 2005.
