Christmas Stocking Project
Every year, as a guild, we make Christmas Stockings to give to various charities. In the past, we have given to Collin County Children's Advocacy Center, Salvation Army, and Hope's Door. For the past couple of years, we have focused on giving to Parkland Hospital. We not only sew the stockings, but we fill a good many of them with toys, crayons, and such for children, and toiletries for women. Last year we were also able to give about 200 stockings (unfilled) to an organization called Soldier's Angels that sends them to Active Duty soldiers serving around the world.
The stockings are very easy to make, especially if you do three or more at a time! First, pick up a kit at any guild meeting, or call LaDawn Dalley and she will get some to you! Then, follow these simple directions:
- 1. Sew the stocking pieces together with right sides facing and using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Clip the curves and turn right side out. Please Press!
- 2. If you have a 7 x 11 inch piece of cotton fabric, sew the short ends together (so you have a circle). Turn it inside out halfway and press. (It should look like a cuff.) If you have a 4 x 7 inch piece of fleece, all you need to do is sew the short ends together and turn it inside out. It does not need to be doubled.
- 3. Fold the ribbon in half. Aligning the raw edges, pin the loop to the center back seam of the stocking. Stitch in place. (The ribbon will be hanging down inside the stocking.)
- 4. Slip the cuff inside the stocking, matching the seam with the center back seam of the stocking. Keep the raw edges even and the hanging loop pushed down toward the heel of the stocking. Sew the cuff to the stocking. Turn the cuff to the right side of the stocking.
- 5. You’re done! Now, do a few more, please!
